46th anniversary of New York Central’s record-setting high-speed run using a jet-powered RDC as a rolling laboratory. On July 23, 1966, M-497 reached 183.85 mph, an American rail speed record that still stands to this day. According to designer and operator Don Wetzel, the M-497 had actually reached speeds upwards of 196, and was actually de-accelerating when it went through the speed recorders.
