The Clockwork Motorcycle Project

The National Geographic Channel challenged me to make a clockwork motorcycle in 48 hours for their show “Mad Inventors”.  I built a drag bicycle frame with two springs, intending to time it with a verge-and-foliot escapement.  While the escapement worked, the time constraint forced me to leave it off and the torque from the mainsprings wreaked havoc on the frame and axle.  Still, I got it to go 37 feet.

Watch online here:

Mad Scientists: World’s Weirdest Bike

I’m currently trying to gear it down and get some more meat on the rear tire.
